Dear Quickie Readers and romance aficionados,
his is an excerpt from a novel I wrote three years ago. The rest of it needs a lot of work but I felt like the romance scenes have real chemistry. I hope you enjoy it.
Here’s a brief synopsis; it’s about a ghost writer, CJ, and her country boy turned P.H.D. student love interest Logan. CJ doesn’t want a boyfriend and can’t understand her undeniable attraction to Logan. He’s the polar opposite of what she usually goes for and she doesn’t plan on sticking around town after her book is finished. He turned her down for a kiss on their last date but reluctantly she agreed to go on another one…

Stargazing, Lips Grazing
Even though CJ promised herself she would forget about Logan, she found herself letting him take her on a surprise date. It felt amazing to drive with the roof of his Jeep down, the night was humid but cooling off and CJ forgot how delicious it felt to shiver. The only problem was the occasional knat that targeted her face. She tried to discretely spit one out. They talked about traveling as they drove. Logan had apparently spent several months hiking through the Canadian wilderness. CJ imagined him being so happy out there. Again, the more she knew about him, the more she liked him. It was relaxing to be with someone so at ease, so opposite from her restless energy. He seemed to view the world in a beautiful, simple way where following your dreams and doing the right thing were only natural.
They pulled off of the main highway onto a gravel road and a couple of miles down Logan turned right into the middle of a field with swaying prairie grass as their only companion. Logan slowed down and turned off the engine and headlights. CJ felt uncertain for the first time. This date was getting a little too Jeepers Creepers for her. Was this surprise date going to involve a gruesome and untimely death?
“Ok, Logan you got me this time. What is it that you wanted to show me,” CJ said. Logan smiled at her and leaned closer to her.
“I’ll give you a clue. You don’t even have to leave the car to see it. Let me show you,” he said. He was facing her now and he reached his left arm to the other side of her seat. They faces were close and she could feel him breathing on her neck. Sure, she could barely contain herself when she was around him, but how conceited of him. She was about to tell him off when he reached beneath her seat and pulled back the lever. Her seat plunged backwards and she let out a little yelp.
“Sorry,” Logan laughed, scratching his head. “I wanted to keep you guessing until the last possible minute, I guess that wasn’t so smooth though.” He pulled his seat back too and then pointed up at the sky. Suddenly it all made sense. The moon was full and CJ couldn’t believe how beautiful it was. It looked enormous, at least twice as big as she had ever seen it and so brilliantly bright. The stars were twinkling fiercely and something inside of her was touched to the core. It had been so long since she had just appreciated how beautiful the simple things in life could be. Logan pointed out the big dipper and then they just sat there for a while gazing at the stars in silence.
“Logan, this is so beautiful. Thank you,” CJ said turning her head to look at him. Her eyes had adjusted to the light and the moon was shining over his face seeming to pool in his arresting eyes. He looked serious and CJ wondered if there was something wrong.
“CJ, there is something I have been meaning to tell you. I’m sorry about the other day when I took off in a hurry when you may have been trying to… tell me something,” Logan said. CJ blushed a little. She had thought she wanted to get it out in the open, but now that it was happening she wished they could go back to their comfortable silence.
“No, Logan, I’m sorry. I was reading into things that weren’t there and it was stupid of me to automatically assume that you were single or that it was some kind of date,” CJ said quickly wanting to get it all out.
“CJ, you weren’t wrong to assume anything. I would never treat a girl the way I treat you if… if I didn’t want her to be my girlfriend,” Logan said earnestly. Relief rushed over CJ but she still didn’t understand why he had pulled away from her.
“Well, you don’t owe me any explanations, Logan, I just wanted to tell you I’m sorry that I tried to kiss you, that’s all,” CJ said.
“CJ, please just let me finish what I am trying to tell you. I wanted to kiss you, very badly, I can’t stop staring at you when I’m around you, I’m not surprised you noticed. It’s just that, CJ, I think you are absolutely gorgeous, but you’re a hell of a lot more than that. Let me put it this way, you could have any man you want, and I could never take advantage of you because you are in a vulnerable position. You are out of your element right now, I’m sure that in New York you go on real dates and I couldn’t bare to be that guy who got with you because you were in a transitional period. I wanted to show you that I could do something nice for you without expecting anything in return. When you tried to kiss me, I realized if I didn’t leave right away I wouldn’t be able to stop myself even though it’s not what you needed,” Logan said. He looked so sincere, like he was in a confessional. CJ couldn’t believe what she was hearing, how could she have been so wrong about his intentions?
“And what are you doing right now?” CJ asked. It was the only thing she could say, but she wanted to kiss him more than anything in the world. His lips were the only thing her traitorous eyes could focus on. Logan grinned a devilishly.
“I decided to hell with what was right. If the only reason I can get with a knockout like you is because you are in a transitional period, then I would be a damn fool not to take advantage of this situation,” Logan said. CJ’s heart pounded and she felt hope lighten her entire body until she thought she might float out of the car. She hadn’t even allowed herself to admit how badly she wanted him until this moment. It made her breath catch in her throat because it was more than she had dared to hope for. Her whole body relaxed and she leaned into Logan, not giving him enough time to protest and gave him a deep wet kiss that lasted a minute. At first he seemed stiff with shyness but soon his mouth became soft under her probing lips.
“Trust me Logan,” CJ said coming up for air, “I may be in a weird place in my life, but one thing is certain. I am lucky to be with you.” He smiled at her and cupped her chin with his hand and gently pulled her towards him again. This time he kissed her back, softly at first, but he soon had her moaning under the soft gentle orbs he was making with his tongue. His full lips felt perfect between her teeth and she gently sucked on them slowly at first and then opened her mouth, letting herself forget what was happening and simply enjoy how good it felt to be in his arms. Logan stroked her hair with one hand and had his thumb on her chin, cupping her face with his other hand. Maybe it was true what they say about full moons, CJ would have loved an astrological explanation, but all she knew for sure was she had never felt so alive.
Her body felt fluid and soft under his touch. Soon his fingers were making slow circles down her back and when he reached the bottom of her black cotton tank top, his fingers dipped underneath it and started sliding up her stomach. She tilted her head back under his soft fingertips and he took the opportunity to kiss her neck. CJ let out a content sigh. He had found her secret pleasure spot and was covering it with rough kisses. He sucked on her neck by her collarbone and then bit her gently, raking his teeth over her delicate skin. This time she let out a real moan, and at that exact moment his fingers began to gently stroke her breasts. He slid his fingers beneath the elastic band of her tank top and his thumbs made gentle circles on her pert nipples. After about a minute of this routine, she felt dazed with pleasure and forgetting where she was, pulled off her tank top. Logan sat back a moment and just gazed at her and then bit his lip.
“God, CJ,” he said. “You are so much more beautiful than I even imagined and trust me, I have a vivid imagination.” With visible difficulty he brought his gaze up to her eyes.
They kissed and caressed for another hour until CJ reluctantly pulled her shirt on, sucking in the night air to cool her swimming head. Logan dropped her off at her house that night and as said goodbye, he pulled her in for the kiss she had so desperately wanted the last time they were together.
“This is to make up for last time,” he said, grinning sheepishly.
“Trust me Logan, I will be giving you lots of opportunities to make up for last time in the near future,” CJ said. She laughed and got out of the car, feeling light and warm as she bounced towards the door, wishing this night would never end.
